Title: Off topic: I have watched Batman: The Dark Knight tonight
Post by: Starlight on July 23, 2008, 03:21:42 PM
I have to say the film is fantastic!  :)

Especially for Heath Ledger, he has done a really great job to act as Joker! This Joker has made me shiver many times during the film goes on. His demise is a great lost  :-[

Although I understand the reason and there may have some truth beneath the story, it does hit on my nerve to see a fairly negative image about Chinese.  :-[

I wish there may have a bit positive image about Chinese(or Asian) in the future.

I really didn't see that in the movie, Starlight, not to disagree with you, but could you elaborate a little?  I understand that the finance guy was from Hong Kong, but I didn't get the impression that it was painting the Chinese in a negative light as a whole, just that one guy.

I did agree that it was fantastic, easily the best Batman movie to date, probably the best superhero movie to date.  Heath Ledger played easily the best comic book villan I've ever seen.  What I really liked about the movie was DC comics gave the studio a lot of creative control over the characters.

Edit:  I'm listening to a podcast now of Kevin Smith reviewing the film and he has a great quote "This is the Batman film that all Batman fans have been waiting for their whole lives."

Oh, that's just my thought about it, you don't need to agree with me. I understand that there are always good and bad people in everywhere...however, there are not much movies talking about good Chinese people. Maybe because I'm Chinese and I'm a bit sensitive towards something like that.

Also, inside the film, the finance guy talks about giving money to HK police to do any "favor" for him. The truth within this are rather in doubt. I have to admit that  HK has not much influence onto the politics of mainland China and corruption does exist. However, there is a department (ICAC) which deals with corruption in HK. It may not be useful to expose the corruption related to those influential people from China, it does not, however, turn a blind eye to the corruption within HK police. This is one of the things we are still very proud of.

EDIT: I have to add that there are still many bad side in China and Hong Kong that I really don't like. *Sigh* But that's another stories...

I got to watch it last night!  I rarely can afford the movies, so it was a treat.

Definitely a great movie.  I think that the recent superhero comic book movies coming out lately have been excellent.  The Spidermans, Iron Man, and Batman have all been excellent movies.  I think the key is that they go about it differently lately.  Instead of "Let's make a superhero movie"  They say "Let's make a really good movie then throw in the superhero element."  That's what they did with Batman.

I agree that Heath Ledger did an amazing job and not just because that's what you are supposed to say about an actor that has recently diseased.  The character he presented was amazing and believable.

As far as the Chinese being presented in a bad light, it is true.  It wasn't really directed at the Chinese and in reality it was a careless representation of a Chinese Mob Boss being presented as a bad guy.  The truth is that the United States kinda has a propaganda campaign going against China and our media presents China as being a bad place that is taking our resources, surpressing their people and just generally not being nice.  While China may have a lot of problems that they need to fix, they are making progress and undergoing a massive transformation.

Anyway, the point is that the United States must always have a villian.  It's how we roll or something like that.  Right now, our current villian is China, so Hollywood jumps on the opportunity for all of our heros to work against some currupt person from there.  It was done carelessly in Batman.  They weren't trying to make a statement, it's just how they roll . . . (my teenage daughter hates it when I say that so of course I say it all the time now.)

In any case the movie really was excellent.
