Title: Dragon Age modules and custom content
Post by: kookoo on January 22, 2010, 05:22:25 PM
So. . . We have a new game where the community can create modules and custom content.  I decided to take a search to possible highlight where Dragon Age may be going with the community.

What I discovered so far is that a person can create an account with EA and log into forums about the toolset and projects going on, but it seems to take a lot of work to get to these projects.   I also noticed that IGN does not have a vault for Dragon Age as they do NWN and NWN2.

Does anyone know the easiest way to get to community made material for Dragon Age?  And does anyone know off hand about whether or not the Vault will be hosting any of the content?

DA has their own social networking site that is capable of hosting modules and CC.  It is also capable of hosting modules and CC for NWN1 & 2.

I thought that it was only going to be for Dragon Age and NWN1 work -- that is, for modding for Bioware games. NWN2 is an Obsidian game. Do you have a source for the info that they would host NWN2 work as well?

I asked Maximus, and he told me that the Vault doesn't have any plans to add Dragon Age content.  He did not clarify as to why.  I believe that EA is most likely keeping control of it, but that's speculation on my part.

I don't see a problem with DA content hosted by another site but why split the NWN content and create new archives for it when the Vault is still doing fine?  :-\

There are a couple other sites hosting DA content. DA Nexus comes to mind.

My understanding is that this is simply Bioware's decision to offer a solution for their own moddable games. They either didn't anticipate the need and/or didn't have a workable plan to do so for NWN, but they wanted to have one for DA. It's only natural that they would want to include NWN as an option now that they are developing such a capability. Why would they exclude it?

As for DA on the Vault: I have no idea if this is their thinking, but if I were them, I'm not sure I'd want to compete with the game's publisher in hosting mods for a new game. Also, DA's mod packaging technology is a bit different and (as I remember it) more complex than for NWN. I need to go over my notes, but my memory is that Bioware (the experts at this) were setting up their site to try to make this as easy and seamless for users and builders as possible. It's not just for putting up your stuff and downloading it; it has features for team development and project management as well.

With regards to DA, it makes sense to me. However, I personally have no intention of downloading any NWN1 content that is not on the Vault. Way I see it, the Vault has been good for and to us all these years. BioWare didn't develop a site for downloading their game prior to DA, so the Vault took up the slack and through the Vault, we have quite a community.

For me, the Vault is still excellent for my needs NWN1/2 wise, and I'm simply not interested in the 'new kid on the block' at this stage in the game ;)

They've got every right to offer that, I guess, but I still hope noone will make use of it. We don't need another means to divide the community.  :-\

Agreed.  Isn't it the natural course of things to evolve as a company?  If I owned a company that produced content similar to NWN or DA, I would want to host a site by my own company to distribute said content.  Not sure why Bioware didn't do that in the first place.  I'd assume because it was a fairly new idea in the gaming industry when NWN came out.  I guess they wanted to see where it was going before committing employees to cover yet another site.  Understandable, but, like I said before, if it were my company, I'd take the risk.

That's pretty much the way I see it as well.
