Ok, I'll begin.  Everyone is allowed to write one sentence and let's see what we get.

"It began in the mountains on an overcast day, where only one ray of sunshine broke through the clouds.

One sentence?  (The second isn't really a sentence at all.)  Also, perhaps we shouldn't switch tenses?  "In the shadows lay the keeper of the crystal, sword unsheathed, nostrils aflare." [???])

Anyhoo:
The magic that had bound it to guard this place had been ancient even when its wardship had begun.
